As your alarm clock explodes into life each morning, and you reach out to pound it back into submission for another ten minutes, does the thought ever cross your mind that there could be a way to end this same tired, old routine?

Each day, as you make your way to and from your workplace, amidst the fumes, frustration, and financial drain that is the lot of a commuter, do you ever dream of being able to step out of your bedroom and straight into your workplace?

If you're a Star Trek fan, you may be thinking, "Yes! Beam me up Scottie"--but if that was your first thought, then I'm afraid you may have to wait a little while longer. Transporter technology hasn't quite been perfected yet. However, in spite of that slight delay in scientific progress, there is still a way to have the commute-free lifestyle you've been longing for. In fact, there are many people who have already turned that dream into a reality by successfully building their own home-based online businesses.

For the online business owner, there are no traffic jams, no co-workers breathing down their neck, and best of all, no BOSS! What more could anyone ask?

It sounds wonderful, and it certainly can be. However, achieving the type of success that will free you from the 9 to 5 rat race, does not just happen by itself.

The unfortunate fact is that most people will never reach this level of business success--not because they don't have what it takes, but rather because they aren't willing, or prepared, to take the time and effort needed to establish a proper business structure.

Now, right from the start, I'll quite honestly say that this guide does not come with any absolute promises or guarantees. When it comes to business, there is no such thing as a "sure thing." However, it does contain solid, time-tested procedures and advice that are essential for anyone who wants to succeed in any form of business. The new business owner ignores these things at their own risk--and, sadly, many do.

One of the main problems, when starting a business, is that many people begin with unrealistic expectations and the wrong information. If you do an internet search about starting a home-based business, you will be flooded with sites that promise to reveal the secrets of success that will help you to get rich quick. With titles such as, "How I Made $100,000 in 3 Days," they tempt the budding entrepreneur with offers that seem too good to be true--and they usually are. Although it may be possible for someone to make a lot of money in a relatively short space of time, the reality is that for the vast majority, it is completely unlikely. Creating any form of successful business takes time, preparation, commitment and hard work.

Although many people want to start their own online businesses, very few actually know how to go about doing it ... but that doesn't stop them. Armed with little more than a desire to make money, they rush in and begin something that they are completely unprepared and unsuited for.

A quick search on any topic will provide a plethora of sites providing relevant products or services for sale. If you take the time to visit these websites, you'll quickly notice that most are quite unprofessional in appearance, and have little, if any, chance of success. Why? Quite simply because the new business owner has started things off on the wrong foot.

There really aren't any special secrets to starting an online business, but there are some basic steps that will help you build your way to an online success.

Step 1: DECIDE WHAT YOUR BUSINESS IS GOING TO BE

At first glance, this initial stage of starting a business appears incredibly simple, if not completely obvious. Yet you may be surprised to discover how many people are involved in a business for which they have no experience or training. In fact, many have not even taken the time to research the field at all.

It makes good sense to choose a line of business for which you have some affinity. For example, if you have experience in designing and creating handcrafted items, a potential business opportunity would be that of an online store devoted to selling your crafts, and those of other artisans. Because you have a background in this particular field, you would have an immediate rapport with your target audience, and be able to understand what is important to them regarding your type of product. You would also be able to provide accurate and interesting articles that are relevant to your field of expertise. As a marketing tool, many a business has been enhanced by the introduction of an informative newsletter.

So, experience in your chosen field is definitely a big advantage. But there is one other thing that is vital--and that's passion. There is no question that a person who is passionate about their business will have a far greater chance of seeing it become a success, than would someone who is ambivalent about their product or service. Believe me, I speak from experience.

Many years ago, my wife started cleaning homes as a way of earning another income, and she did very well.

A few years later, seeing the opportunity to make money, I decided to get involved in the cleaning business too, and I also did quite well. However, even though I was very happy to have my own business, I never truly enjoyed what I was doing. In fact, I have to admit that I dreaded the work. As a result of my lackluster attitude, I never took that business to the level that it could have reached if I had been at all passionate about it.

There is a lot of truth in the saying that "If you do what you love, you will never work a day in your life." So before rushing headlong into the first business opportunity that comes your way, make sure that you take the time to really consider what is the right business for you, based on your interests, experience, talents and passions. If making money is the only positive factor, then think again. Taking the time to get this first step right, will ensure that you have a rock-solid foundation upon which to build the online success of your dreams.

People living in all parts of the world are looking to change their lifestyle utilizing the access given us through the Internet. Many are looking for a Work At Home program, but finding it difficult to find in some parts of the globe. One online work at home program that is extremely popular and accessible is Data Entry.

Data Entry is available worldwide so that makes it one of the most used programs to generate income currently on the web. The other factor is its similarity to processing rebates in that we feel comfortable doing the task required.

Why work at home? Well the earnings potential is unlimited and I have found that you spend less time working and make more income then the typical day job. For some people that do not have a job or cannot find a job it gives them a fair chance to take care of their family and enjoy life.

When you are doing your research on the web you will find various types of Data Entry programs available for you to choose from. Doing the proper research is key to your success. I recommend either using a website like mine, but not necessarily mine, that has done some research for you. You can spend days doing it yourself, but if you are like I was in the beginning, I did not even know what to look for in an online company. I can tell you it's not looking for the most attractive ad that promises everything for nothing.

Effort is required, If you are looking for something for nothing, this is not it. While the time required is minimal and you can set your own hours, you will have to do some work at home to earn money.

Another important thing is your work at home profile. Ask yourself the following questions:

* How many hours can you put into your Work At Home endeavor?

* How much money do you realistically want to make?

* How quick do you want to start earning money?

* Do you want a Home Based Business or simply to Work at Home?

* What are your current skill sets?

* What types of things are you comfortable doing?

* Can you exercise patience, while working from home for money?

* Are you willing to invest the cost of going out to dinner and a movie with your family or a friend into your future?

You may think of other things, but if you have answered these questions you have a good idea of your work at home profile. So what should you do next?
Well, you should do your research, narrow down your choices to 2 - 3 programs that match your work at home profile, join and start working from the comfort of your home. Please feel free to read both this article or one of my many others by visiting my link in the resource box below. I always enjoy getting emails pertaining to my articles or my site. Your feedback is important to me.

Give you and your family a chance at a b better life. Many people are doing exactly that.

Internet Business Marketing For Success

Internet Business Marketing For Success

Article Body:
How can a business that is already successful in reaching their local market extend their marketing reach online?  The good news is that the traditional offline marketing that has always worked so well will still work at least as effectively to promote your online presence.  The other side of the coin is that to promote your business online, the old traditions need some updating to keep up with online marketing best practices.

Any business should already have a marketing plan and objectives from their offline initiatives, so let's jump straight into the technology aspects of online marketing. I generally look at the following things first, because they can be done at very low or no initial cost, and also because subsequent specialist marketing won't be as successful without these things in place. Of course there is a huge amount more to online marketing, the extent of which could easily be justified as a full-time university course.  This is the pre-school notes, to help get your site to a starting point on a low budget if you can't quite afford to be calling in the big guns to market your site for you professionally just yet.

1. Site optimization

This is always the place to start, because the effectiveness of everything which follows is often dependent on this being done up front.  When I say this, I include great content and intuitive navigation as the basis for everything.  Only once your site has been optimized for intelligent visitors should you tweak it for search engines, but never at the expense of the former.

Search engines look at things like keyword density and how specifically a page matches a specific search term. Of course this is extremely over simplistic, but nevertheless a worthwhile starting point.  By identifying 10-20 key terms you would like search engines to pick up on, and creating specialised pages with relevant information which utilises those terms in the right way, you will start getting much better results once your site has been indexed.

You will find that it is best to use specialised keyword phrases, for example "precision-engineered bolts" is likely to get better placement than a generic term like "engineering parts". You should also work to create a single page for every key phrase you want picked up on, and include the key phrase in the title, meta tags and use all the words in the body of the page at a high density relative to other words. You should also preferably include the key phrase in the page title, as well as the URL of the page, for example,  Each page should use a different title, specifically based on the key phrase utilised in that page's content.

Your site should really be developed using XHTML and CSS these days, table-based design has numerous technical problems associated with it, and it results in a lower keyword density than the current standards.

Ideally you should use a content management system which incorporates and facilitates all of the above quickly and effortlessly, such as that provided standard with RealmSurfer sites. This will allow you to manage your own content optimization, with a bit of trial-and-error.

2. Linking and indexing

The next step is to get search engines to start to notice and index your site. Google, for example, won't even look at your site until it has been linked to by at least one other indexed site. Paid inclusion (paying the search engines to index your site on a priority schedule) can be appropriate at this phase if you need to urgently accelerate this process, however it is not always necessary.

Especially useful at this stage can be participating in forums serving your primary target market.  This has the dual benefit of creating awareness of your business within communities you would like to reach, and at the same time can help create incoming links to your site, something that search engines pay particular attention to. Ensure that your site details are included as a link in the footer of your posts.
Never use a forum to spam members or submit unsolicited advertising posts -- that just has the opposite effect of destroying your business' credibility.  Some forums have a separate advertising section in which it may be appropriate to professionally post information about your services and products.  Always make sure that your presence represents a valuable contribution to the community.  Stay on topic and be professional, helpful and constructive.

Search engines take many factors into consideration when ranking a site. New sites, for example, don't initially fare well, however you will find they will allocate some credibility weighting to you the longer your site is up and running. The biggest factor though, external to the site itself, is the number of inbound (preferably non-reciprocal) links from other sites, and the context and wording of the referring link, as well as the ranking of the referring page, and referring site. The popularity of those sites plays a big role, as well as how high up in the site's own hierarchy the link is. By way of example, a link from  counts for much more than a link from a very deeply embedded page like

3. Implement online marketing partnerships with high-profile online businesses

This is where you can really benefit if implemented successfully. When I was previously running the e-commerce business unit for a large company, rather than pay high-traffic websites to advertise on their sites, which can be very much untargeted, we offered them a percentage of sales. In other words, we provided them with the banners to promote the service, and implemented simple tracking of where our visitors were coming from, and then paid a percentage of the total revenue to the referrer. This resulted in very low marketing costs to us, and the referring sites started placing more and more emphasis on their side to ensure that we got top placement whenever they were low on paid inventory.

Another effective medium-term strategy is to provide content of value to sites which serve your target market. They benefit from your topical content, you benefit from the exposure and links.

4. Dabble in paid keyword advertising

Only at this point should you actually be starting to pay for online advertising. These forms of advertising, however, allow you to specifically target certain people, which means you get a much better return on investment than simply advertising to everyone. This can take some trial and error to find what works best, but the amount you pay should be less than the amount of business you generate, and should normally include full measurement and reports on a reasonably regular basis, preferably online.

For this purpose, I often suggest starting with Google. They are by far the most popular search engine globally, they have a very good reputation, provide reporting online, and are probably the most likely to produce results initially. Yahoo and MSN also have excellent paid link systems, and they keep getting better all the time.  The latest offerings from all three are now also starting to allow targeting to specific demographics, a trend that is likely to become the preferred way to target online audiences once the capabilities for this type of targeting matures.

5. Involve an internet marketing specialist

At this point, you should be starting to see some results, and be in a good position to ask some intelligent questions. Preferably deal only with a business that has a good reputation (ask for client contact details so you can find out how effective they are), and has preferably has been around for at least a few years. They should also provide very detailed reports (ask for examples of these up front), and be able to explain in detail how they go about promoting your site, on which sites they do so, the number of views and clickthroughs per site per day, and how effective each promotion was relative to the next. They should also meet with you at least once a month to review successes and failures and involve you in the decision-making process of where next to promote your business. At least monthly, you should be in a position to evaluate your cost per sale for various promotions, and to change your focus accordingly.

Especially be wary of businesses who claim unrealistically quick results, or base their business mainly only on search engine submission, or use deceptive practices to try and "trick" search engines into ranking you higher. These usually at best produce no value, and can in some cases lead to your site being removed or ranked very low by search engines.

Get Thousands Of Visitors By Submitting To Directories

Get Thousands Of Visitors By Submitting To Directories

Word Count:
515

Summary:
There are a number of ways you can increase your traffic flow, but submitting to directories can be extremely successful.

Keywords:
web site directories, article directories, free advertising, page rank

Article Body:
There is no question that the key to running a successful business is to generate a steady traffic flow. There are a number of ways you can increase your traffic flow, but submitting to directories can be extremely successful. Whether it is submitting articles to article directories or submitting your site to web site directories, you will begin to get thousands of visitors by doing so.

When you submit to directories, you are receiving free advertising. All over the internet you will see advertisements and promotions trying to get you to pay for advertising. But in reality, submitting to directories can be equally successful when it comes to increasing your traffic flow.

There are thousands of people that search article directories and web site directories for ideas and opinions. Whether the web surfers are looking for ideas for their own site or just quality content, you will have your content and site viewed thousands of times. And by placing a link to your site with the submission, people will have easy access to be redirected to your site.

Submitting articles to article directories can do much more than provide a link for people to click on. When you submit articles, you are also delivering quality content to be seen by hundreds of thousands of people. There is so much duplicate content on the internet that readers are salivating for fresh content. If you can produce fresh and enticing content, people will jump to your site to see what else you have to offer.

Another way you can get thousands of visitors to your site by submitting to directories is through page rank. By targeting specific keywords on your web site, you can climb higher on the search engines. The better your site flows and casually spreads your keywords throughout, the higher your page rank will be.

Search engines reward quality sites with a higher page rank. Typically you will find the higher page rank sites toward the top of the search engines. And according to the golden triangle rule, internet surfers tend to focus on the top four or five searches on the search engines. Therefore, try to spread keywords throughout your site without making it too obvious and you will begin to climb up the search engines.

A business is nothing without traffic. You could have the best web site in the world, but if nobody knows it exists, it is nothing. That is why it is essential that you take the time to submit your articles and web site to thousands of article directories and web site directories. The more directories you submit to, the better chance you have of people seeing your site. From there, you will notice a steady increase in the amount of traffic you receive.

Always look for directories with either high page rank, or a good predicted page rank.  Normally new directories make good ground fast in traffic, page rank and serp.  This is good for your site and surely worth submitting to, because they are either cheap or free.

What are you waiting for then, GET SUBMITTING!!!!!

Before entering a new market, try testing it first

Before entering a new market, try testing it first

Word Count:
479

Summary:
Before your valuable time and money are spent building a website and infrastructure, here's one way to test the waters of a new possible online market with very little work.

Keywords:
choosing products, testing new product, online marketing, testing new target market, affiliate marketing

Article Body:
You know information is valuable.
You know the Internet is a profitable venue for marketing information.
You think you may have a great idea or maybe even a product... Now what?

If you've done your research, you already have the right tools to start your online business. Namely, you know how to make a website (or if you don't know how, you know that you can learn how to do it easily or that you can hire someone else to do it for you) and you understand the mechanics of selling your product online (like signing up with a payment processor and getting visitors to go to your site).

But maybe you're afraid to start.

There's nothing wrong with being wary; in fact it's good business sense to know what you're getting into. A common statistic thrown around is that 9 out of 10 new businesses will fail within the first year. But knowing that doesn't mean it's time to quit before you even start. You have a product and therefore you have a target market; it's useful, even necessary, and most certainly comforting to your beginner's brain to do your own research and due diligence.

One method of practicing your business before actually going it alone is to become an affiliate. Using an affiliate program to enter a new market allows you test out your ideas and hone them with the ultimate goal of creating and promoting your own product. (In summary, for you beginners out there, affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission off of purchases made by visitors who arrived at that particular product's site by clicking on a link on your webpage).

An advantage of affiliate marketing is that your only concern is driving visitors to their site; the affiliate program will worry about having the perfect product, providing customer service, and delivering the product. Affiliate programs may even provide you with banners or free e-books and techniques showing you how to promote them. This will provide a good learning ground for you so that you can garner ideas for eventually promoting your own product.

Find some affiliate programs related to your particular idea or product. The research you'll derive from joining an affiliate program will be the real benefit. By setting up a website or a few websites testing out your various ideas and promoting these ideas, you can then sit back and see what happens. Hopefully you'll start making money. Then you can see which products are really selling and what marketing techniques are working. As you work on improving your website for the products that are selling, you're laying the groundwork for selling your own product. You can then feel more comfortable about your own venture using the successful techniques you learned through this "practice" attempt.

And maybe starting your own business won't look as scary.

Writing Articles – Your Style and the Effects on Your Traffic

What should you consider when you are writing an article?  Well, it depends upon what you want to convey to your reader.  Do you want to inform, present the issues, or complain?  How do these styles of writing, and the words you use, effect your readers and your traffic?
Information for your Reader
On the Internet, the most prevalent of articles is the informative article.  Readers on the Internet connect to your article because they want to learn, or resolve an issue that they are currently facing.  The "How To" or "factual" piece should present viable facts and possible solutions to the reader. These types of articles can increase your creditability on the Internet as an Expert.
Pro and Con Article
With this type of article you can slant the article either for or against.  Or, you can present both sides, and let your reader draw their own conclusions.  In either case, whether you are for, or against the issue, back it with facts. Why?  As always, your creditability is on the line.
To Complain
Okay, this article really isn't a type, but one I felt I had to address.  In this case, the writer uses the article as a pulpit to express his complaints. If it is presented tastefully, you will get people to listen.  However, if it is more of an "I'm mad at the whole world" scenario – then this writing, I personally feel, should be reserved to a blog – your own.
Example of my own experience with a complainer.
It has been my habit, to read several articles of a writer, just to get a feel for the author, and possibly see if a little of his personality may seep into the article.
Anyway, I came across this website, and read several of  this individual's articles.  To my dismay, I found the articles that I read, biting and uninformative. I began to wonder if this person ever had anything good to say about anything, or anyone.  So to give the individual the benefit of the doubt, I read several more articles.  To my dismay, the complaining and criticism continued.  I found it distasteful, uninformative, and with all the negativity that flowed through the person's words, it actually gave me a headache.  Needless to say, the individual lost my vote, and I clicked away.  Lesson learned--if you complain – make sure you can support your claims – and don't do it too often, or over time you will lose your readers.
There are positive and negative ways of presenting your words to your reader.  The choice is yours as to how you want to present them (words).  But remember, the click of the mouse is still the choice of the reader.

An All-Around Yoga Exercise: 12-Step Salute to the Sun

One of the all-around yoga exercises is the 12-step salute to the sun. Do it once or twice when you get up in the morning to help relieve stiffness and invigorate the body. Multiple repetitions at night will help you to relax; insomniacs often find that six to 12 rounds help them fall asleep.

1. Stand with your feet slightly apart, palms together, thumbs against your chest

2. Inhale deeply while slowly raising your hands over your head, and bend back as far as possible, while tightening your buttocks. Hold for three seconds.

3. Slowly exhale and bend forward, keeping your knees straight, until your fingers touch the floor outside your feet. (If you can't touch the floor, go as close as you can.) Bring your head in toward your knees.

4. Slowly inhale, bend your knees, and if your fingertips aren't outside your feet on the floor, place them there. Slide your right foot back as far as you can go, with the right knee an inch or so off the floor, (a lunge position). Now look up as high as possible, arching your back.

5. Before exhaling again, slide your left foot back until it is beside the right one, and with your weight supported on your palms and toes, straighten both legs so that your body forms a flat plane. Make sure your stomach is pulled in.

6. Slowly exhale, bend both knees to the floor, bend with your hips in the air, lower your chest and forehead to the floor.

7. Now inhale slowly and look up, bending your head back, then raising it, followed by your upper chest, then lower chest. Your lower body - from the navel down - should be on the floor, and your elbows should be slightly bent. Hold for three to five seconds.

8. Exhale slowly and raise your hips until your feet and palms are flat on the floor and your arms and legs are straight in an inverted V position.

9. Inhale slowly and bring your right foot forward as in position 4. The foot should be flat on the floor between your fingertips. The left leg should be almost straight behind you, with its knee slightly off the floor. Raise your head, look up, and arch your back.

10. Slowly exhale and bring your left foot forward next to your right one. Straighten your legs and stand, trying to keep your fingertips on the floor, and try to touch your head to your knees as in position 3.

11. Slowly inhale, raise your arms up and stretch back as in position 2. Don't forget to tighten your buttocks. Hold for three seconds.

12. Slowly exhale, lowering your arms to your sides. Relax. Repeat the series.

There are some common mistakes that can destroy a thriving ecommerce business. Most of them are easy to avoid, but some of them sideswipe business owners in their simplicity, and can leave a thriving business at the bottom of the pile for months. Here are some advanced Internet Marketing techniques to help webmasters avoid sabotaging their business websites.

Landing Pages

A common mistake is not paying attention to landing pages. Many ecommerce businesses make landing pages and leave it at that. Unfortunately, much of the web is human driven, and people do not follow mathematical patterns. This means that a company's perfectly designed landing page may be ignored while a seemingly random page brings a few hundred hits a day.

This is caused by several reasons. The most common is a balance between keyword phrases used by users, which are often different from what they 'should be,' and the content on the page. It often has a lot to do with the number of random web users who linked to that page.

In many cases, a webmaster will notice a particular article that bloggers and forum posters love. They create hundreds of links to this page, increasing the Page Rank, and hits. Many webmasters never pay attention to these pages, failing to utilize these pages as landing pages. So, hundreds of thousands of visitors hit that page in a year - then leave.

Searching

Most Do-It-Yourself Internet Marketers work for years before they learn the value of searching their own pages. The best way to find unusual and new keyword phrases is to search your own site.

The important thing is to learn how well you rank against the competition and who exactly is your competition. This can be vital to the success of an Internet Marketing Campaign.

Step #1: Do all your competitors sell similar products or offer similar services? If not, it is possible that your ecommerce site is using the wrong content and keyword phrases. Targeting the wrong market will quickly deplete a company's resources.

Step #2: Are the websites successful? Taking a look at the websites on the same page as your website will provide a good idea whether your idea is popular and profitable. If the 'page' you are on is not a good one, then it is time to change the website until your website is sharing a page with a better class of web pages.

Step #3: How many pages do you appear on? Every website should be able to gain 'page one' exposure on at least 50 search keyword phrases. The company may need to start with the more obscure keyword phrases, but appearing on page one of a keyword phrase that only receives 100 hits a month is better than appearing on page 300 of the #1 keyword phrase.

Step #4: Build Organic Listings as well as focus on your Pay Per Click campaign. Most webmasters find one favorite method of Internet Marketing and then stick with it, abandoning all others. Websites that use Pay Per Click campaigns should also focus on building Organic Listings. These 'free' listings will continue to serve the website, even if the PPC campaign becomes popular and 'out of reach' for small business use.

What exactly is a franchise?

The word is used to refer to a business that utilises the logo, name and operation systems providing that they come up with the required funds and are prepared to give the parent company a share of the profits.

Just like any other business there are positives and negatives –the future depends on several factors.

A franchise enables on to hit the ground running - it removes a great deal of the work in simply getting an idea from the head to the planning board to a functioning project.

On the downside franchise fees are usually high - this is the burden of being spoon-fed an entire business - along with this comes the necessity to have sufficient funds laid aside. It could be argued that without sufficient funds the simple act of purchasing a franchise could well be deemed as a burden.

Arguing against that, a franchise has lower risks than a brand new product irrespective of how good the product is. While it is speculation as to whether or not a new business will succeed or fail, one can see the record of the parent company on which to base his/her views.

On the other side, one that owns a franchise must abide by the rules of the parent company-this can have the effect of stifling creative or entrepreneurial thoughts, and as such may inhibit the exploration or challenge of your creativity.

So what affects the success of a franchise?

The type and success of a business-it is important not to franchise from any company but to have a look at the particular success the company is having; also important is to look at the longevity of the company and its product range.

Some franchises require the franchisee to have special qualifications, skills or knowledge of a certain field.

Time and management skills are obviously needed ,thus if one is not willing to spend sufficient time managing the business then it is important to have reliable, dependable and trustworthy people to front the business-could you rely on someone to ensure that your business.

There are many other factors that can and do affect the future of a franchise; however it is essential to make sure that the franchise is really what one wants.

When one examines the possibility of a franchise it is important to take into account of essential factors such as availability of capital, the possibility of hurdles, how many hours are available to spend on the business, the back-up support available in the event of problems etc.

If these factors are all in place and the fundamental examinations have been taken care of then it can most certainly be a good career option.

Should one wish to evaluate the choice there are numerous sources available for advice and numerous articles around giving advice - I have found this to be particularly helpful and the information within excellent.

While it is a natural reaction to think nothing but positive thoughts about an impending venture, it is prudent to dot the "i"and stroke the "t"s.

The world of search engine optimization is quite competitive.  For a search engine optimization company to be successful, it is important to develop a strong, well-respected online presence.  Here are five ways that are guaranteed to keep your SEO company from gaining respect:

1) A poorly designed web site

Nothing says "amateur" like a poorly designed web site.  If your web site looks like it was created by an eleven year old with Microsoft FrontPage, you are going to have an extremely hard time convincing people to hire you.  Even though you may be an SEO and not a web designer, people still expect your web site to have a professional appearance.  Showing your potential clients your unattractive web site is like showing up to a job interview in shorts and a t-shirt.  If you don't have an eye for web design, do yourself a favor and hire a web designer to create a professional looking web site for your company.

2) Ranking poorly for your company's name

If you really want to ensure that no one hires you for your search engine optimization services, make sure that your company web site ranks poorly in Google for its own name.  Better yet, make sure it doesn't even get indexed!  If you cannot even get your company's web site to rank well for its own name, chances are search engine optimization is not the field for you.  You don't have to rank on the first page of Google for search engine optimization or search engine marketing (although it is very useful if you do), but at least rank number one for your company's name.

3) Spamming

Unless you are David Naylor, spamming is not going to attract any potential clients.  Whether you are trying to spam your company to the front page of Digg or just posting tons of useless threads on forums to build up your back links, spamming is frowned upon by most of the general population.

4) Bad spelling and grammar

This may seem like a minor detail, but bad spelling and grammar can have the same effect as a poorly designed web site.  Whether its ten typos on your home page or poorly written forum posts, bad spelling and grammar makes you and your company look much less professional.  This is something that can easily be avoided by proofreading what you type before you post or submit it.  If you really have a hard time putting together coherent sentences, invest in a copy of The Elements of Style.

5) Taking on jobs that you can't handle

If you take on a client and promise them that their web site will rank on the first page of Google for Viagra, chances are that relationship is going to end badly.  It is extremely important to not only be realistic with your clients about their expectations, but also not to ever take on a job that you know you won't be able to accomplish.  Taking someone's money and not delivering results is a guaranteed way to drag your company's name and reputation through the mud!
